The California High School Exit Exam
California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE): State law (Senate Bill 1354) authorized the development of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE), which students have to pass in order to earn a high school diploma. All California public school students must pass the CAHSEE and meet all other state and local requirements in order to receive a high school diploma.
The purpose of the CAHSEE is to improve student achievement in high school and help ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate minimum competency in reading, writing, and mathematics.
At the beginning of the first semester or quarter of the regular school term, the governing board of each school district is required to notify the parent/guardian of a student regarding rights and responsibilities of the parent/guardian (see Education Code Section 48980(e) for more information). Beginning in grade nine and each year thereafter, student and their parents/guardian must receive notification of the CAHSEE requirement through this annual notification process. The notification must include, at a minimum, the date of the exam, the requirements for passing the exam, and the consequences of not passing the exam. It shall also inform parents/guardians that passing the exam is a condition of graduation. If a student transfers to another school district, notification must be given at the time of transfer.
Standardized Testing and Reporting Test (STAR)
California Standards Tests (CSTs) The California Standards Tests in English-language arts, mathematics, science, and history-social science are administered only to students in California public schools. At the high school level, these questions are all multiple-choice. These tests were developed specifically to assess students' knowledge of the California content standards. The State Board of Education adopted these standards that specify what all California students are expected to know and be able to do in each grade or course. CST scores are used for calculating each school’s Academic Performance Index (API) and adequate yearly progress (AYP). Information about the API and AYP is posted at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ar/index.asp
THS continues to rely heavily on results of the STAR assessment in measuring and assessing students' academic achievement and growth within the areas of ELA, math, social studies, and science. THS utilizes departmentalized final exams to assess all students consistently within the respective courses and departments that share and/or incorporate similar content standards. Two years ago, THS implemented the assessment instrument, EduSoft. Additionally, District pacing calendars and benchmark assessments were created and implemented for all core subjects. The purpose of these tools is to provide ongoing and consistent assessments of student progress that allow teachers, students, parents, and administrators to receive feedback regarding students' achievement and mastery of the Content Standards related to the core areas.
